Sutter Home Winery’s December Book Club Pick: The Pursuit of Mary Bennet by Pamela Mingle

Sutter Home Winery has selected The Pursuit of Mary Bennet by Pamela Mingle as their book club pick for December! This charming, modern sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice reveals the untold story of the awkward, late-blooming Bennet sister, Mary, who finally gets her own chance at love. Celebrate Jane Austen’s birthday on December 16 with this book and a feast fit for royalty, perfectly paired with a glass of chardonnay.

The English have always loved their meat and fowl. Picture an oversized Henry VIII sitting at a table piled high with venison, pheasant, pigeon, roast beef, and pig. And even swan! References to roast pork, cold ham, even toasted sandwiches can all be found in Jane Austen’s writing and letters. Remember Emma’s father sending “Hartfield pork” to Miss Bates? At our table when I was growing up, my father insisted on plenty of meat, and no day was more important than New Year’s for our traditional roast pork, mashed potatoes, and baked apples. Sutter Home Dec Mary Bennet

Roast Pork and Baked Apples

Roast Pork

2-3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary or 1 teaspoon dried

¼ teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

2½ pounds boneless pork loin

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Chop the garlic and mix with the rosemary, salt, and pepper.  Rub the mixture all over the pork. Place the pork fat side down in a roasting pan and roast for 30 minutes. Turn it fat side up and roast for about 25 minutes more, or until a thermometer inserted in the center registers 155°F. Let the pork rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Baked Apples

4 large baking apples (I like Rome apples)

4 teaspoons butter

¼ cup brown sugar

¼ cup chopped walnuts

Wash and core the apples (don’t peel) and stand them upright in a separate baking dish with ¼ cup water. Add butter, brown sugar, and nuts to the center of each apple.  Bake alongside the pork for the last 25 minutes, or until desired tenderness.
