Sutter Home Winery’s August Book Club Pick – A Taste of the Sea!
In this story of perseverance in the face of adversity, Regina Calcaterra recounts her childhood in foster care and on the streets—and how she and her savvy crew of homeless siblings managed to survive years of homelessness, abandonment, and abuse.
Regina Calcaterra’s emotionally powerful memoir reveals how she endured a series of foster homes and intermittent homelessness in the shadow of the Hamptons, and how she rose above her past while fighting to keep her brother and three sisters together.
Beautifully written and heartbreakingly honest, Etched in Sand is an unforgettable reminder that regardless of social status, the American dream is still within reach for those who have the desire and the determination to succeed.
Regina cites the beach as a large source of comfort during her difficult childhood, as well as a source of food for her and her siblings! Pair her delicious mussels on the grill recipe below with a delicious Pinot Grigio for the perfect beachy meal!
MUSSELS ON THE GRILL
For every pound of mussels include the following:
1 clove of finely chopped garlic
1/2 tablespoon of finely chopped chives
1/2 tablespoon of olive oil
1 tablespoon of white wine
Sprinkling of fresh basil & red pepper
1 crushed Roma tomato
Blend the ingredients to create a broth. Place cleaned mussels in a high round bowl of tinfoil atop the grill. Soak the mussels in the broth. Close the tinfoil at the top so the mussels simmer on the grill. Once they open, serve immediately with a thinly sliced baguette for dipping or over angel hair pasta.
